TWAS EATS @ LA TORTILLERIA

la tortilleria

La Tortilleria on Dufferin at Bloor, is home to authentic Mexican food of all shapes, smells and tastes.  It’s bright and clean looking interior invites you to take-out, eat in, or purchase the ingredients to do it yourself.  Their house specialty is fresh corn tortillas sold by the gram, but there is so much more.  You can lose yourself browsing the grocery shelves, looking at all the different varieties of chiles alone!   Who knew there were so many? There’s Chile de Arbol, Chile Guajillo Molido, Chile Pasilla, Chile Mulato, Chile Morita, and Chile Ancho, and don’t get me started on the beans!  The cooler contains crema fresca, and store made salsa, and variety of cheeses.  They sell their own tortilla chips as well as stocking a large selection of imported Mexican corn snacks and soda pop.

I took a long time looking at the menu but decided to try the trio of soft tacos with my choice of fillings for $7.25.  I chose pork, beef and veggie.   The bottom is layered with refried beans and rice and then topped with the fillings.  The beef was ready spiced but the my other choices were very tame until I added a side order of guacamole (which is fabulous) and some hot sauce.  The taste of the corn tortilla comes through brilliantly and sure beats the standard wheat flour tortillas found commonly around town.  Other menu items include burritos, quesadillas, taco salads, guacanachos, los campechanos and crispy tacos.  Sides include crema fresca and pico gallo (salsa), and there are churros (fried dough stick rolled in sugar and cinnamon)  for dessert.

They have other locations around town including one in Kensington.  Well-worth a visit so try all of the!                                              Lise Watson
