Born in Prague, Lenka Lichtenberg is a published composer, vocalist (Yiddish, English, Czech, French, Russian, Hebrew), producer, and bandleader with 6 solo CDs and an MA in Ethnomusicology to her credit.  Her music channels the rich Toronto soundscapes of Middle East, India and Brazil, and her own East European heritage. She is the recipient of the 2012 Canadian Folk Music Award for  “Traditional Singer of the Year” and two nominations for 2013 Independent Music Awards (Best Album: World Traditional; Best Song: World Traditional). A child star in her native country, Lenka has now been the subject of two documentaries for the Czech national television.

Lenka has performed at festivals and concerts in 25 countries on 4 continents, as a solo artist, with a trio, or backed by the superb musicians in her group Fray (Alan Hetherington, Ravi Naimpally, Ernie Tollar, John Gzowski and Chris Gartner). Her collaborative projects include Bridges with Middle Eastern musician-dancer Roula Said, and Lullabies from Exile with oud and violin virtuoso Yair Dalal, which takes intertwined Yiddish and Babylonian music into an enchanted new world.

Lenka has been described as “Passionate and prolific ,… a force of nature within Canada’s world music scene” (Nicholas Jennings, Penguin Eggs); CBC Radio’s Karen Gordon introduces Lenka’s 2013 daring new album Embrace as “absolutely exquisite” (Fresh Air.)  David Farrell (New Canadian Music) refers to Lenka’s voice as “…ethereal, sometimes hypnotic”, whereas Paul Corby (Regent Radio, Corby’s Orbit) calls it “heavenly”.
